About Xscape

Xscape live performance

For more than three decades, Xscape has stood as one of R&B's most distinctive and enduring vocal groups, building a legacy on unmistakable harmonies, powerful vocals and a catalog that helped define the sound of '90s R&B. Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, the group emerged from the city's burgeoning music scene as teenagers and would ultimately become one of the most successful female R&B groups of their generation.

Xscape's story began in Atlanta, where the young singers developed their sound through school, church, local performances and talent showcases. A pivotal performance at a birthday celebration for producer and entrepreneur Jermaine Dupri brought the group to his attention. Xscape would become one of the foundational acts signed to his newly established So So Def Recordings, helping launch a label and movement that would play an important role in establishing Atlanta as a major force in R&B and hip-hop.

In 1993, Xscape released its debut album, Hummin' Comin' at 'Cha, introducing audiences to a sound rooted in gospel-inspired harmonies and contemporary R&B. The album produced the breakout hit "Just Kickin' It," which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, along with "Understanding" and other fan favorites. The platinum-selling debut immediately established Xscape as one of the defining new R&B groups of the era.

The group followed its breakthrough with 1995's Off the Hook, further defining the Xscape sound and producing records including "Feels So Good," "Who Can I Run To" and "Do You Want To." "Who Can I Run To" would become one of the group's signature recordings, while Off the Hook continued Xscape's platinum-selling success.

Their third studio album, Traces of My Lipstick, arrived in 1998 and delivered another collection of enduring R&B records, including "The Arms of the One Who Loves You," "My Little Secret" and "Softest Place on Earth." The project became Xscape's third consecutive platinum studio album, cementing a remarkable run that created a catalog still embraced decades later.

What has always distinguished Xscape is the group's vocal identity. Powerful individual voices combine with intricate, gospel-rooted harmonies to create a sound that is immediately recognizable. Whether delivering a ballad, an uptempo record or a harmony-driven slow jam, Xscape developed a musical identity that could not easily be duplicated.

Across its career, Xscape has sold more than 10 million records in the United States, earned three consecutive platinum albums, scored six Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 hits and achieved three No. 1 hits on the Billboard R&B chart. The catalog includes multi-platinum, platinum and gold-certified recordings that continue to connect with audiences more than three decades after the group's debut.

Following the group's original album run, Xscape's influence continued throughout music and popular culture. The individual members expanded into songwriting, television, acting, entrepreneurship and other areas of entertainment, while the music they created together remained a fixture of R&B. As appreciation for '90s R&B grew across generations, so did renewed demand to experience Xscape and its catalog live.

That demand eventually brought Xscape back to major stages, where sold-out performances and tours demonstrated that the group's connection with its audience had never disappeared. Longtime fans who grew up with the records now stand alongside younger listeners discovering the catalog through streaming, social media and a renewed appreciation for the vocals and musicianship that defined the era.

Xscape's contributions have been recognized throughout the music industry, including the ASCAP Golden Note Award, recognition from Black Music Honors, and the Lady of Soul honor at the Soul Train Awards. The group continues to reach more than one million average monthly Spotify listeners and maintains a combined social audience of more than 1.7 million followers, demonstrating the continued reach of a catalog created more than three decades ago.

Today, Xscape continues to celebrate its history while creating new ways for audiences to experience the music. From touring and live performances to new interpretations of the catalog, the group continues to demonstrate that great records can evolve without losing what made audiences fall in love with them in the first place.

Songs including "Just Kickin' It," "Understanding," "Who Can I Run To," "Feels So Good," "Do You Want To," "My Little Secret" and "The Arms of the One Who Loves You" remain part of the soundtrack of a defining era in R&B while continuing to find new audiences today.

More than 30 years after Xscape first emerged from Atlanta, the foundation remains the same: the songs, the voices and the harmonies.

Three decades of hits. Generations of fans. A legacy that keeps growing.
